Chapter 5 - BEFORE JULIAN

Eleanor Bennett met my grandfather twelve years before I met Julian. Business.

Harrow owned a medical-office portfolio. Eleanor’s late husband, Charles Bennett, ran a private investment firm seeking to buy one building.

Deal failed. Then relationship continued. Advisory work. Introductions.

Board dinners. Nothing unusual.

Then Edward Hale’s daughter—my mother—died. That was when he updated his estate planning.

Eleanor apparently knew I was beneficiary. Not exact value.

Enough. Then Julian and I met two years later at a charity auction. Coincidence? Maybe.

Maya found no evidence Eleanor arranged it. Good.

I did not want every moment rewritten into plot. Julian and I genuinely met through mutual friends.

He genuinely pursued me. We genuinely fell in love.

Then six months into dating, Eleanor ran a background check. Normal for paranoid rich family? Creepy.

She found my connection to Edward. Then she called him.

What did they discuss? We did not know.

Edward’s trustee records contained one note: E. Bennett inquired regarding Clara. Declined to discuss beneficiary matters.

So Eleanor tried. Then one month later Julian proposed? Too fast. Let's say a year later.

Did Eleanor push? Julian admitted later she became suddenly enthusiastic about marriage after initially disliking me.

That hurt. Then wedding.

No prenup? There was one.

I signed independent prenup. Separate property.

Harrow inheritance clearly separate. Interesting.

If Eleanor wanted money, why support prenup preserving mine? Because maybe she wanted access, not ownership.

Consulting contracts. Property relationships.

Influence. Then after marriage, Bennett Strategic Services began receiving Harrow contracts.

Timeline. Two months after wedding.

That was suspicious. Did Edward approve?

Some contracts predated his knowledge? Board minutes showed contracts approved by Harrow executives, not Edward personally.

Then Julian joined one advisory committee. Then the questionable sale involving Vanessa’s husband.

Pattern. Maybe the marriage became a bridge.

Did Julian intend that at beginning? We needed evidence.

Then Maya found an email from Eleanor to Julian dated one month before our wedding. Subject: HARROW.

Body: Do not ask Clara about her grandfather yet. She will get emotional and ruin what can be a useful relationship for everyone.

There. Julian replied: I’m marrying her, not Harrow.

That line made me cry. Because once, he resisted.

Then Eleanor: Same thing eventually. No reply.

Then three years later, after trustee contacted Julian, another email. JULIAN: Clara cannot know how entangled this is.

ELEANOR: Then keep her out until distribution. JULIAN: She’ll hate me.

ELEANOR: She’ll understand once everything is stable. Again.

Later. Truth after control.

Then I saw when Julian crossed the line. Not before marriage.

Three years into it. He learned about my contingent control.

He learned Bennett contracts might be reviewed. Instead of telling me, he agreed to keep me out. Why? Fear. Money. Family.

Then power of attorney. Could have been used to renew contracts and residences without my direct attention.

That became central. Then Paula Greene, notary, agreed to interview.

She remembered the packet. Did I sign in front of her?

“No.” Then notary was false.

Who brought signature page? Julian.

Did he say I had signed? “Yes.”

There. Then criminal exposure.

Not for inheritance. For false notarization and use of authority.

Paula admitted she notarized without me present because Eleanor said “family paperwork.” Again.

Family as exception. Then Paula said something worse.

“There were other documents.” How many?

“Six or seven.” My name?

May you like

“Some.” Then the story exploded again.

Because the power of attorney might only be one of several times Julian’s family used my signature when I was not in the room.
