Chapter 8 - JULIAN’S CHOICE

Julian wanted reconciliation. Not immediately.
First he wanted legal survival. Then family survival.
Then marriage. That order told me enough.
He hired independent counsel. Good.
Then he admitted using my signature. Not all four? He admitted delivering documents with copied signature after Eleanor and Richard? Wait Richard not introduced. Let's keep Paula and Julian.
He said Paula already had signature images from prior files. Who inserted?
An assistant at Bennett Strategic Services. Under whose instruction?
Julian said Eleanor. Eleanor denied.
Then metadata. Files were assembled on Julian’s laptop.
There. He stopped denying.
“I built the packets.” “Did you paste my signature?” “Yes.” Clean.
Why? He said: “I thought they were renewals of things you would have approved.”
Then: “Did you think I would approve Graham sale?” “Probably.”
“Consulting contract?” “Maybe not.”
Then: “So?” He looked down.
“We needed it done.” There.
Again. Need before consent.
Then I asked why he threatened me at the mansion. “You deserved worse.”
His face changed. He said he had been angry after Eleanor called him from another room claiming I had attacked her first.
Did he believe? “At first.”
Then he entered and saw me on floor. Bruises.
Vanessa filming. Why still side with Eleanor?
“Because I saw you had broken the pots.” The pots were already broken after Eleanor knocked one? Need explain.
Earlier that afternoon, Eleanor had shoved one flowerpot from ledge while arguing, then blamed me for “destroying property.” Two more shattered when I stumbled during hair pull. Vanessa’s video showed.
Julian did not know. Still.
Then: “I chose Mom before facts.” Yes.
Then he said: “I’ve been doing that for years.” That was insight. Then affair? None.
Good. Then he admitted something else.
Eleanor had pressured him to keep me financially uninformed because she feared I would replace Bennett contracts with my own advisers. Julian agreed because his career partly depended on Bennett Strategic Services.
He received salary there. He was not independently wealthy.
The family lifestyle came from contracts. If I reviewed and cut them, his income and mother’s housing could shrink.
So he had direct financial motive. Then: “Did you marry me for Harrow?” “No.” Evidence supported.
He did not know exact inheritance until later. Then: “Did staying married become financially useful?”
He closed eyes. “Yes.”
That mattered. Then he asked: “Was any of it real?”
I laughed sadly. “Why are you asking me?”
Because he needed absolution. I refused.
Then we discussed divorce. He did not want.
I did. Then he begged for counseling.
I said: “Not to save marriage. Maybe to end it without lies.”
We attended four sessions. Not reconciliation.
Disclosure. He admitted resentment.
My career success. His dependence on Eleanor.
His fear of losing status. My independence made him feel replaceable.
Instead of telling me, he used family structures to keep leverage. Then therapist asked: “What did you think would happen if Clara knew she controlled Harrow?”
May you like
Julian answered: “She wouldn’t need me.” There. Not money. Need.
He had helped hide my power because he feared what I would become with information. That ended marriage more completely than the threat ever did.
