Chapter 8 - THE SMART-HOME AUDIO
The smart-home audio became central in the protective-order hearing.
Not because it recorded everything.
Because it recorded enough.
Marvin:
Your paycheck is mine. Your mouth stays shut.
Plate impact.
Then:
Fight me again, and dinner won’t be the only thing I break.
Then my movement.
Then my question.
Then Camryn demanding I turn off the phone.
Then her voicemail playing:
Break her tonight.
The timing mattered.
So did the fact the device recorded automatically.
Marvin’s lawyer argued the words were taken out of emotional context.
The judge asked:
“What context makes threatening to break something other than dinner appropriate?”
Silence.
Then my martial-arts background came up.
Marvin’s lawyer tried to suggest he had reason to fear me.
Maya asked:
“Before Rachel used one defensive takedown, how many times had she struck Marvin?”
“None.”
“How many objects had she thrown?”
“None.”
“Who grabbed whose wrist?”
“Marvin grabbed Rachel.”
A use-of-force expert explained the movement.
Single escape.
Single takedown.
No follow-up attack.
Proportionate.
That mattered.
My skill did not make me the aggressor.
Restraint made the evidence clearer.
Then Marvin testified.
He admitted grabbing me.
Admitted throwing the plate.
Admitted the threats.
His lawyer looked surprised when he refused to minimize.
“Why are you admitting this?”
Marvin answered:
“Because it happened.”
That was the first sentence from him that felt fully accountable.
Then Maya asked:
“Why did you believe Rachel’s paycheck belonged to you?”
Long silence.
“Because I thought marriage meant we stopped having separate lives.”
“Did that apply to your debts?”
He looked down.
“No.”
“Did Rachel know all of them?”
“No.”
“So separate rules still applied when secrecy benefited you.”
“Yes.”
The protective order was granted.
No direct contact.
No access to my accounts.
No approach to my workplace.
Then Marvin asked through counsel to begin an intervention program before criminal disposition.
