Camryn’s laptop contained a spreadsheet called FAMILY CONTINUITY.
It should have been called RACHEL LEVERAGE.
Rows:
Rachel salary.
Rachel company distributions.
Expected marital lifestyle.
Projected divorce settlement.
Potential challenge to prenup.
Temporary support target.
Business-equity claim scenario.
They had modeled my marriage as a financial asset.
Not because they expected divorce.
Because they wanted options if I stopped cooperating.
Then a column:
PRESSURE POINTS.
Reputation.
Marriage optics.
Family loyalty.
Fear of conflict.
I stared at that last one.
They knew.
Marvin had told Camryn I hated public confrontation.
True.
I grew up in a quiet family.
Arguments were private.
Camryn interpreted that as weakness.
Then another note:
Rachel freezes when cornered. Marvin should lead.
That explained the dinner staging.
The whole family table.
Camryn at one end.
Marvin beside me.
Folder ready.
Not random.
They were using social pressure.
Then a note from Camryn:
Do not threaten divorce first. She may accept.
That chilled me.
They feared I might actually leave if divorce became explicit.
So they wanted ambiguity.
Enough threat to create fear.
Not enough clarity to make departure easier.
Control often lives in uncertainty.
Then Maya found a postnuptial draft.
Not signed.
It would have granted Marvin a share of future company appreciation.
He had opened the file eight times.
No evidence he forged it.
Yet.
But his emails showed he planned to raise it after my payroll moved.
Incremental.
Income first.
Equity later.
Then one message:
Camryn:
Once she’s used to sharing salary, the rest is easier.
I stopped reading for the day.
Not because weak.
Because evidence can overwhelm.
Maya said:
“You don’t need to consume every ugly sentence at once.”
Good advice.
We preserved it.
Then went home.
My apartment.
My lock.
My account.
My silence.
