Chapter 12 - The Doctors Had To Correct The Record Too
One of the most important parts of Mom’s recovery had nothing to do with court.
It was her medical chart.
Words had accumulated there.
Confusion worsening.
Reported agitation.
Possible medication noncompliance.
Caregiver reports unreliable recall.
Some were based on real symptoms.
Some on Vanessa’s reports.
All needed review.
Mom’s physicians added clarifying documentation.
Medication-induced cognitive worsening suspected.
Caregiver history unreliable in several prior encounters.
Patient’s self-reports partially corroborated by independent records.
That last line made Mom cry.
Not because it sounded flattering.
Because someone finally wrote into an official medical record:
She was not imagining everything.
The medication regimen was simplified.
Within weeks, Mom’s alertness improved noticeably.
Her memory did not become perfect.
The stroke had caused real changes.
But she became more consistently herself.
Which proved another painful truth:
Vanessa had hidden manipulation inside genuine disability.
She did not invent Mom’s vulnerability.
She exploited it.
That made the deception harder to see.
