Chapter 13 - Vanessa’s Defense Was That She Was “Helping”
Vanessa never admitted she wanted to hurt Mom.
Even after confronted with camera footage and medication discrepancies.
Her explanation was different.
She said Margaret’s care had become chaotic.
She believed stronger medication control was necessary.
She believed Daniel needed more authority over the trust.
She believed the family would eventually thank her.
That was how she described it.
Helping.
Her lawyer argued she had exceeded caregiving boundaries but had no intent to cause serious harm.
The investigation treated the financial and medical conduct separately.
Some actions were unethical.
Some potentially criminal.
Some required expert interpretation because she had legitimate access to medication as a household caregiver.
Real cases are messy.
But one fact was simple:
She knowingly gave doctors misleading information.
Changed medication organization without proper authorization.
Used the resulting confusion as evidence that Mom was becoming incompetent.
And physically attacked Mom when she threatened to expose the records.
Intent did not need to be cinematic to be ugly.
She wanted control.
Mom’s independence stood in the way.
