Chapter 6 - Daniel Was The Last Person To Believe Us

My brother came home that evening.
He walked into a house full of lawyers, medication lists, and one furious eighty-one-year-old grandfather.
Daniel looked from me to Mom.
Then to Vanessa.
“What happened?”
I told him.
He went pale.
Then shook his head.
“No.”
I stared at him.
“No what?”
“Vanessa would never deliberately mess with Mom’s medication.”
Mom flinched.
That hurt her.
I saw it.
Grandpa saw it too.
Daniel continued:
“She has been helping more than anyone.”
“Helping?” Grandpa asked.
Daniel looked at him.
“She organizes everything.”
Grandpa replied:
“That is exactly what worries me.”
Vanessa started crying.
Not loudly.
Perfectly.
“Daniel, your mother has been confused for months.”
Mom whispered:
“I knew you’d say that.”
My brother looked at her.
For one second, something in his face broke.
“Mom…”
She turned away.
That was when I understood the real damage Vanessa had done.
Not just medication manipulation.
She had inserted herself between Mom and every person Mom might trust.
