Chapter 7 - The Camera In The Pantry Changed Daniel’s Mind

Our mansion had security cameras in common areas.
No bedrooms.
No bathrooms.
But entrances, hallways, kitchen, pantry access.
The pantry camera existed because of valuable wine storage.
Nobody remembered it until Grandpa asked.
We reviewed six weeks.
Most footage showed nothing.
Then we found a pattern.
Vanessa entered the medication pantry late at night after everyone else went upstairs.
Sometimes legitimate.
Sometimes she simply moved pill boxes.
But on four occasions, she opened Mom’s labeled organizer.
Removed tablets.
Replaced them.
Then changed the paper dosage card clipped beside the tray.
Daniel watched in silence.
On the third clip, his hands began shaking.
The fourth showed Mom entering unexpectedly.
She pointed toward the organizer.
There was no audio.
But the argument was obvious.
Vanessa closed the box.
Stepped toward Mom.
Mom backed away.
Daniel paused the video.
Nobody said anything.
Then he whispered:
“She told me Mom had become paranoid that night.”
I looked at him.
“She made her paranoid.”
He closed his eyes.
“No.”
Not denial anymore.
Grief.
Because the woman he loved had not simply lied to his mother.
She had manipulated his perception of his mother.

That betrayal went deeper.
