Chapter 7 - My Job Promotion Made Vanessa More Necessary

Six months before the incident, I accepted a promotion.

Operations director.

More money.

More responsibility.

Two early-morning meetings each week.

Occasional overnight travel.

Caleb adjusted what he could, but his job began early too.

Daycare opened at:

7:00.

My calls sometimes started:

6:30.

Vanessa offered:

“Drop Emma here.”

Three mornings a week.

She would feed both girls breakfast and take Emma to preschool after Lily left for elementary school.

Perfect.

Free.

Family.

I offered money.

Vanessa acted offended.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

Mom said:

“She’s your sister.”

So I stopped offering.

That created another invisible imbalance.

Because when you receive regular unpaid childcare, correcting the caregiver starts to feel:

ungrateful.

I did not say that aloud.

I felt it.

If Vanessa complained about Emma:

I listened.

If she said I needed to be firmer:

I defended myself less.

Because underneath every disagreement lived:

She is helping you.

May you like

That gave Vanessa more parenting influence than anyone formally intended.
