Chapter 1 - The Birthday Phone That Turned Everything Inside Out

Warm afternoon light poured through the grand reception hall in Beverly Hills, catching the crystal chandeliers and reflecting off the polished ivory marble floor. The room looked elegant and perfectly controlled, with fresh flowers arranged around a large white birthday cake on the celebration table, but the tension between the four people in that room had already shattered any illusion of peace.
Owen Carter stood beside his mother, Claire, clutching a smartphone in both hands. His pale-blue shirt was slightly wrinkled from how tightly he’d been holding it against his chest, and his face carried that strained, frightened look children get when they know something terrible is happening but have decided they have to be brave anyway. Serena Blake stood several feet in front of them in her fitted burgundy dress, visibly angry, defensive, and far too focused on Owen’s hands. Daniel Carter, who had only just stepped through the double doors, frowned at the sight of his son looking at him with such urgency.
“DAD—YOU NEED TO SEE THIS!” Owen shouted.
Daniel moved straight toward him. Owen’s thumb hit the screen, and the video began. Daniel took the phone from his son and stared at it. Claire leaned over his shoulder, her breath catching as she watched. Daniel’s expression shifted almost instantly—confusion first, then disbelief, then something colder and harder that made Serena stiffen.
“GIVE ME THAT DAMN PHONE!” Serena screamed.
She lunged toward Daniel, but he pulled the phone out of her reach and kept watching. By the time the video ended, the look in his eyes had changed completely. He raised his head and stared straight at Serena.
“YOU DID THIS TO THEM?!” he roared.
Serena threw both hands up, shaking her head wildly. “THAT VIDEO IS A LIE!”
Owen pressed closer to Claire. Serena lunged again, reaching for the phone, and Daniel blocked her arm with his free hand. In the struggle, the smartphone slipped from his grip. It hit the marble hard. The screen went black at once.
For one suspended second, all four of them froze.
Then Daniel turned back toward Serena and took one slow, deliberate step forward.
He didn’t touch her.
He didn’t need to.
The cold rage in his face did more damage than a slap ever could. Serena’s confidence broke visibly. She started backing away, hands raised, retreating across the marble floor as Daniel kept advancing. Her heel caught the hem of her own burgundy dress. She lost her balance and crashed backward into the celebration table. The large white birthday cake tipped, then smashed across her chest, dress, and face. White frosting exploded across the fabric, flowers toppled from the centerpiece, and loose petals scattered across the floor around her as she slid down and landed seated in the wreckage, stunned and humiliated.
The dead phone lay dark on the marble nearby.
Owen stared at it, then lifted his voice again.
“DAD—THAT WASN’T THE ONLY VIDEO!”
Serena froze where she sat on the floor, frosting streaked across her face, her eyes suddenly wide with a level of panic none of them had seen before. Daniel turned slowly toward his son. Claire looked from Owen to Serena in shock.
And in that instant, every person in the room understood the same thing.

Whatever Daniel had just seen on that phone was only the beginning.
