Chapter 5 - The First Video Was Worse Than Claire Expected

Later, Daniel would have trouble remembering whether he physically felt the world tilt while he watched the first clip, or whether it only felt that way because the content was so sickening.
The video had been recorded about three months earlier, most likely through a hidden indoor camera Serena had placed while she still had occasional access to the Carter home through old staff contacts and social visits. The footage showed Owen sitting alone in his playroom, working on a model airplane at the small table by the window. A few seconds later, Serena entered the room.
The date stamp made no sense at first. Daniel didn’t remember Serena being in the house that day. Then Claire did.
It had been the afternoon of a memorial planning meeting for Daniel’s late father. Serena had attended briefly at the request of Daniel’s aunt, who still socialized with her and insisted everyone “behave like adults.” Claire had stepped into the kitchen to take a call, and for less than five minutes, Owen had been out of her sight.
That was all Serena needed.
In the clip, she walked up beside Owen, crouched down, and spoke in a soft voice Daniel had never heard her use with a child. It wasn’t kind. It was the voice of someone trying to sound gentle while delivering a threat.
“You know your dad almost had a different family, right?” she said.
Owen looked confused and uncomfortable. He did not answer.
Serena continued, “If you keep making everything hard for him, he’ll remember that.”
Then she took the small framed photo of Owen and Claire that sat on the shelf behind him, held it in front of him, and said, “Little boys who cause problems don’t get to keep everything.”
In the clip, Owen’s face changed. He looked scared but defiant. He tried to reach for the frame.
Serena pulled it back.
Then, still smiling faintly, she added the line that made Daniel’s hands shake around the phone.
“And if you tell your mom I was here, I’ll make sure your dad believes she’s the liar.”
That was the moment Daniel had looked up from the screen and roared, “YOU DID THIS TO THEM?!”
Because it wasn’t only about Owen. It wasn’t only about Claire. It was the method that sickened him most. Serena had not simply lingered in their lives. She had used private access to isolate his son psychologically and undermine Claire’s credibility in the same breath.
The clip ended with Serena placing the frame back on the shelf and walking out.
Daniel’s rage was immediate.
Claire’s horror was quieter and, in some ways, deeper.
Because the video proved something she had suspected but could never quite pin down: Serena had been targeting Owen specifically, not as collateral damage, but as a pressure point inside the marriage.

And according to her son, that video was not the only one.
