Chapter 4 - Owen Wasn’t Investigating—He Just Stumbled Into The Truth

Owen was eight, not a miniature detective.
He had no master plan that day, and he did not decode passwords or hack anyone’s accounts. What happened was far simpler and far more believable.
Before Daniel came into the reception hall, Claire had sent Owen to the side console table near the doors to grab the candles she wanted moved closer to the cake. Serena had arrived a few minutes earlier than expected, carrying a slim garment bag and a small leather portfolio that she claimed contained the old photos and documents she meant to return. At some point while speaking sharply to Claire, she set her smartphone down on the side table and walked away from it.
The phone did not lock immediately.
Owen noticed it only because the screen lit up and a video thumbnail appeared. What caught his attention wasn’t curiosity about Serena’s private life. It was that the image on the screen was his own upstairs playroom.
He knew the room instantly.
The rug. The blue storage cubes. The astronomy poster over the shelf.
He stared.
At first he thought maybe it was a normal family video Daniel had once sent her by mistake. Then he saw a still image that included Claire near the doorway and Serena partly in frame, and something about Serena’s posture—leaning in, one finger pointed at him—made his stomach drop.
Owen tapped the screen.
The phone opened to a gallery folder full of short clips.
Several showed parts of his house.
One showed the upstairs landing outside his bedroom.
Another showed the breakfast room.
Another showed Claire’s studio sitting area.
Serena’s voice could be heard in some of them.
Owen didn’t understand all of it at once, but he understood enough to know he needed his father.
He picked up the phone and went straight back to Claire. She saw his face and immediately crouched beside him. He whispered that the phone had videos of their house and that Serena had been in them saying mean things. Claire took one look at the screen and felt the blood drain from her own face.
By then Daniel had just stepped into the hall.
Claire had no chance to process it privately, no chance to preview everything and decide what came first. Owen was already brave enough to know that whatever it was, his father needed to see it immediately.
That was why he lifted the phone and shouted, “DAD—YOU NEED TO SEE THIS!”
And that was why Serena’s terror had been so instant.

She knew exactly what was on that device.
