Chapter 8 - Serena Had Been Preparing A Story In Case She Was Caught
Serena’s first formal statement to police was almost predictable.
She claimed the videos were misunderstood, selectively saved, and taken out of context. She said she had recorded some household interactions because Claire had always been “unstable” and she feared being blamed unfairly for things she didn’t do. She insisted the hidden-camera footage was about self-protection, not surveillance. She said the comments to Owen were jokes, the envelope switch was harmless, and the pantry medication clip proved only that she was “trying to help organize things.”
The problem with lies is that they often require a person to underestimate everyone else at once.
Serena underestimated Owen, because she assumed an eight-year-old wouldn’t understand how to preserve evidence.
She underestimated Daniel, because she believed his reluctance to confront her in the past meant permanent weakness.
She underestimated Claire, because she believed emotional exhaustion made a person easy to discredit forever.
And she underestimated the practical weight of digital evidence.
The files on the iPad preserved metadata from the share event. The timestamps on the videos matched dates Serena was verifiably present in or near the Carter home. Estate security logs confirmed several visits. Text messages recovered from Daniel’s and Claire’s phones lined up with the days certain unexplained incidents occurred. The former staff member Serena had spoken to in one clip was identified and interviewed. Under pressure, the woman admitted Serena had indeed tried to get her to repeat damaging claims about Claire in exchange for “future work.”
Most revealing of all, Serena had kept one note in the same video folder—a text draft never sent, apparently intended either as leverage or as something like a private victory speech. It read: “By the time Daniel sees who Claire really is, he’ll need me again.”
That note mattered not because it proved every act beyond doubt, but because it illuminated motive. Serena wasn’t randomly meddling. She was pursuing a coherent objective: isolate Claire, destabilize Owen, fracture the marriage, and position herself as the alternative.
That was the story she had been preparing.
What she had not prepared for was Daniel finally seeing the campaign whole.
