Chapter 2 - Why Serena Was In That Room At All
If anyone had walked into that reception hall ten minutes earlier, they would have assumed the afternoon was a small private birthday gathering for Owen and nothing more. That assumption would have been wrong.
Serena Blake did not belong there in any intimate or comfortable sense. She was not family, though years earlier she had once come close to becoming part of Daniel’s life in a much more permanent way. Before Claire, before marriage, before Owen, Daniel had dated Serena for nearly two years. The relationship had been glamorous on the surface and emotionally exhausting underneath. Serena was magnetic, stylish, clever, and fiercely possessive. Daniel left her because every disagreement became a power struggle, every boundary became an insult, and every act of independence became something Serena treated like betrayal.
Years later, after Daniel had married Claire and become a father, Serena reappeared in their orbit through business and social circles. At first the contact was limited and civil. Then, during a rough stretch in Daniel and Claire’s marriage after Daniel spent too much time traveling for work and Claire’s father became seriously ill, Serena pushed herself closer. She positioned herself as an old friend who understood Daniel. When Daniel and Claire briefly separated and lived apart for a few months, Serena used that opening shamelessly.
During that period, she inserted herself into Owen’s life so aggressively that even staff later described it as unsettling. She bought him gifts, tried to discipline him without permission, corrected how he spoke to her, and once referred to his mother as “the woman your dad used to live with.” Owen had been too young then to explain why her presence made him uneasy, but he never warmed to her. When Daniel and Claire repaired their marriage and moved back together, Serena did not disappear quietly. She blamed Claire, then blamed Owen, then blamed Daniel’s weakness.
After the reconciliation, Daniel cut the relationship off completely. Or at least he believed he had.
The problem was that Serena didn’t think endings applied to her.
She continued appearing at fundraisers, charity events, and social dinners where the Carters had little practical ability to avoid her. When Claire objected, Daniel agreed that Serena was inappropriate but insisted he knew how to handle it. He believed distance and formality were enough. Claire believed Serena’s obsession had sharpened into something meaner. They argued about it more than once.
The reason Serena was in the reception hall that afternoon was, in Daniel’s mind, simple and manageable. She had requested one short private handoff. Months earlier, she had claimed she still had some personal items from Daniel’s old storage files and a few photographs from a charity gala that included Daniel’s late father. She had asked to drop them off, apologize for the past, and leave. Daniel, wanting the matter closed before Owen’s birthday dinner, agreed to a brief visit at the house while Claire was present.
Claire did not want her there at all.
Daniel compromised by insisting the meeting would be quick and that Owen would remain with them only briefly before going upstairs to change for cake.
That plan lasted exactly long enough for Owen to get hold of Serena’s phone.
And once he did, the entire history between the four of them stopped being a matter of tension and suspicion.
