Chapter 11 - Rebecca Sloan Was Furious Too
Melissa expected Rebecca to protect:
her.
She didn’t.
Rebecca flew to California voluntarily to speak with investigators.
“I gave her a sample proposal because she asked professionally.”
Then:
“I had no idea she planned to use my company name in a fake transaction.”
Could Rebecca have been charged with anything?
No evidence she participated.
Her account received no funds.
She provided email history immediately.
Then one message that damaged Melissa badly.
The night after the attempted transfer:
Melissa:
If anyone contacts you from Parker Foundation about a payment, call me first.
Rebecca:
What payment?
Melissa:
Probably nothing. Banking issue.
Rebecca:
Melissa, why would the foundation contact me? We don’t have a contract.
Melissa did not answer.
There.
Awareness.
Then Rebecca called her the following morning.
Eleven-minute call.
No recording.
Rebecca’s notes made immediately afterward said Melissa claimed:
“Someone at the foundation may have used an old draft accidentally.”
Rebecca considered that strange.
Still did not suspect attempted framing.
Then she learned Diane’s token was involved.
Her friendship with Melissa ended.
Not theatrically.
One final email:
You used my company’s banking information in something I did not authorize. Do not contact me except through counsel.
Melissa lost a twenty-year friendship because she assumed personal loyalty would survive professional manipulation.
