Chapter 3 - Evan Was Not Snooping for Evidence

Grant asked Evan exactly how he found the token.
Not in front of Melissa.
Not repeatedly.
One calm conversation.
Evan explained:
He was looking for his blue sailing cap.
Melissa had borrowed it for a club photograph because the junior sailing team wanted matching caps displayed in a promotional shot.
She told him afterward that she left it in the upstairs guest suite she and Grant sometimes used during late events.
Evan went inside.
The cap was on a chair.
Beside it sat an open makeup bag.
A tiny black object had fallen onto the carpet.
Evan recognized:
it.
Why?
Diane used to let him press the button on her security token when she worked from the club library.
Not during actual transactions.
Just when the device had expired and was being replaced.
Children remember unusual objects.
He picked it up.
Then saw a sticker on the back.
DP-03.
Diane Parker.
He went downstairs.
Diane was in the lobby.
Evan asked:
“Grandma, is this yours?”
Diane nearly dropped her coffee.
Before she could answer, Melissa returned from the terrace.
Saw the token.
Then the confrontation began.
No child detective scheme.
No secret search.
No one had instructed Evan to find:
anything.
He happened to recognize something an adult had assumed was meaningless to him.
That assumption became Melissa’s first mistake.

The security camera became her second.
