Chapter 3 - Laura Had Been Afraid Before The Crash

Laura Miller Bennett had not been weak.
She was not fragile.
She was not the unstable woman Vanessa later described.
She was practical, funny, stubborn, and annoyingly careful.
Robert used to tease her because she kept receipts for everything and backed up family photos twice.
That was why the story about her “spiraling emotionally” before the crash had always bothered him.
Daniel said grief over a miscarriage two years earlier had changed her.
Vanessa later repeated that Laura had become suspicious and withdrawn.
Even some friends remembered her being quieter.
But quieter was not the same as unstable.
Elena’s photographs finally showed Robert what Laura had been worried about.
One image showed a bank transfer request from Bennett Vineyards Operating LLC to a consulting company called VMB Advisory.
Another showed an authorization form with Daniel’s electronic signature.
A third showed an email thread between Vanessa and Daniel discussing cash shortages at the winery.
Nothing illegal on its face.
Related-party consulting happens.
Owners move money between entities.
Businesses borrow.
But one message stood out.
Vanessa had written:
Laura keeps asking why I’m being paid. You need to get her off the accounts before she sees the full reconciliation.
Daniel replied:
I’ll handle it.
That was eight days before Laura died.
Another photograph showed Laura’s handwritten note:
Ask Dad before signing anything. Something is wrong.
Robert sat in Elena’s kitchen staring at that line for nearly a minute.
His daughter had been planning to call him.
She never did.
The next morning, her car went through a guardrail.
The investigation concluded she lost control during heavy rain.
No mechanical defect was identified.
No evidence of another vehicle forcing her off the road.
No sign of deliberate sabotage.
Robert knew better than to invent murder just because betrayal existed nearby.
But now there was a different question.
What had Laura discovered before she died?
And what happened to the financial records she was trying to protect?
That was the mystery Robert brought with him into the motor court.
That was why Noah’s filthy rag meant more than Vanessa understood.
Because it looked exactly like the kind of humiliation Laura had once described in a message Robert had dismissed as marital stress:
May you like
She wants me to feel small enough to stop asking questions.
