Chapter 8 - The Missing Financial File
Laura’s death ended the marriage problem.
It did not end the financial problem.
Three days after the funeral, the refinancing documents were completed.
That detail made Robert’s attorney stop.
Laura’s consent had previously been necessary for one part of the marital collateral package.
After her death, the structure changed.
Daniel became sole holder of certain marital rights, while Laura’s trust interest passed according to her estate plan.
There was nothing automatically illegal about completing a refinance after a spouse died.
The problem was what happened to the supporting records.
The folder Laura had been building disappeared.
The original consulting invoices tied to Vanessa were replaced in the company archive with cleaner descriptions.
“Brand strategy.”
“Hospitality development.”
“Guest experience.”
The amounts remained similar.
The explanations changed.
Robert’s forensic accountant found metadata showing several PDF invoices were recreated after Laura’s death.
Again, recreating invoices is not automatically fraud.
Businesses correct paperwork all the time.
But when the revisions consistently softened descriptions connected to the woman having an affair with the owner, suspicion became reasonable.
Daniel denied ordering the changes.
That led investigators toward the winery controller at the time.
He had retired eighteen months earlier.
When questioned, he remembered Vanessa sitting with him after Laura’s funeral and insisting certain descriptions were “too informal” for lender review.
He changed them.
He claimed he believed Daniel approved it.
Daniel said he had not.
Now the problem became less about one grand conspiracy and more about a network of convenient silence.
People protected Daniel because he was grieving.
People deferred to Vanessa because she became important quickly.
People avoided reopening Laura’s questions because her death made them uncomfortable.
And within that discomfort, the financial history became cleaner than reality.
Robert began to understand what his final line at the car had really meant.
Laura’s death was not unresolved because someone had murdered her.
