Chapter 9 - Vanessa Finally Explained Why She Hated Noah
Vanessa agreed to meet through attorneys after the motor-court incident.
She denied abusing Noah.
She called the forced cleaning “discipline.”
She said he had become disrespectful.
She said Robert spoiled him.
Then Robert’s lawyer asked one question:
“Why did you call his mother trash?”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“It was anger.”
“Why that insult?”
Silence.
Then the lawyer placed copies of the old messages on the table.
Vanessa understood.
Her relationship with Laura’s memory had finally been connected to her treatment of Laura’s son.
She tried to explain.
Laura, she said, had treated her like an intruder from the beginning.
Robert almost laughed.
“You were sleeping with her husband.”
Vanessa looked away.
That was not the whole reason.
The deeper truth emerged slowly.
After Laura died, Vanessa expected the past to recede.
Instead, Noah carried it everywhere.
He had his mother’s eyes.
Her expressions.
Her habit of asking direct questions.
Daniel kept photographs for Noah.
Robert visited.
Every birthday, every school event, every mention of “Mom” reminded Vanessa that she had not replaced Laura.
She had only entered after her.
When Daniel looked sad around anniversaries, Vanessa resented Noah for triggering it.
When Noah asked why Laura wasn’t in family photos, Vanessa heard accusation.
When he said his mother made better pancakes, Vanessa heard rejection.
So she began punishing him for comparison.
That was the psychological core.
Noah was not merely a stepchild she disliked.
He was living evidence that Vanessa could never rewrite the beginning of her marriage.
