Chapter 4 - Vanessa Had Been In The Marriage Before Laura Was Gone
The affair did not begin after Laura’s death.
That was the first lie to collapse.
Robert’s attorney recovered old calendar entries and foundation travel records showing Vanessa and Daniel spent far more time together than either had admitted.
Private dinners labeled as donor meetings.
Two overnight conferences where other staff returned home but Vanessa stayed.
A hotel charge Daniel reimbursed personally instead of through the foundation.
Again, none of those details alone proved an affair.
Then Elena turned over another photograph.
It was taken accidentally while documenting paperwork on Laura’s desk.
In the reflection of a dark computer monitor, a message notification appeared.
From Vanessa to Daniel.
She suspects us. Stop deleting the wrong thread.
The timestamp was five weeks before Laura died.
Robert felt sick.
Not because infidelity explained the crash.
It didn’t.
But because it explained Laura’s fear.
Daniel had spent three years telling everyone his first marriage was already breaking before Vanessa mattered.
In reality, Vanessa mattered enough to hide.
Laura had not been imagining a rival.
She had discovered one.
And according to her notes, the affair was not the only betrayal.
The financial structure around Bennett Vineyards was also under stress.
Daniel had inherited part of the business from his father, but the winery expansion had been financed aggressively. Two weak harvest years and a failed hospitality project left the company needing cash.
Laura owned a minority share inherited through the Bennett family trust after marrying Daniel, but more importantly, she had consent rights over certain refinancing decisions because some marital assets had been pledged as collateral.
Vanessa had been paid consulting fees from a company already under pressure.
Laura started asking why.
Daniel started telling her she was overreacting.
The more she asked, the more both of them treated her as the problem.
That pattern did not prove they caused her death.
It proved they had motive to silence her questions while she was alive.
And after she died, nobody had continued asking them.
