Chapter 10 - Richard Had To Face His Own Part In What Happened
It would have been easy for Richard to cast Vanessa as the only adult who failed Lily.
He didn’t.
His therapist would not let him.
Neither did Lily.
Three weeks after the gala, they sat together in family counseling.
The therapist asked Lily:
“What do you need your father to understand?”
She answered immediately.
“That I wasn’t lying before the video.”
Richard looked down.
“I know.”
Lily shook her head.
“No. You know now.”
The distinction mattered.
She continued:
“When I said she got mean, you said she was stressed.”
Richard nodded.
“When I said I didn’t want to be alone with her, you asked what I did first.”
He felt that one physically.
“I did.”
“When I said she hated Mom’s pictures, you said it was hard for her too.”
“Yes.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“So why did I need a video?”
Richard had no defense.
Because Vanessa was his wife.
Because she sounded reasonable.
Because he wanted the second marriage to work.
Because admitting his daughter was right would mean confronting another family collapse after Caroline’s death.
All true.
None sufficient.
“I made you prove something I should have taken seriously when you told me,” he said.
Lily looked at him.
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
She did not hug him.
Did not forgive instantly.
Instead she asked:
“If I never had the video, would you still believe me?”
That was the question Richard carried for months.
Because he could not honestly answer yes.
Not then.
That became the work.
Learning to listen before evidence became dramatic.
Learning that children rarely present pain like attorneys.
