Chapter 5 - The First Recording Was Almost An Accident
The first recording happened two weeks later.
Lily had left her tablet camera running while filming a school project in the kitchen.
Vanessa entered after Richard had gone to work.
She saw an old photograph of Caroline sitting beside Lily’s notebook.
“What is that doing here?”
“My project is about family history.”
“You have plenty of current family.”
“She’s my mom.”
Vanessa picked up the photograph.
Lily immediately stood.
“Give it back.”
Vanessa held it beyond her reach.
“You do this every time something is going well.”
“Do what?”
“Drag a dead woman into the room so everyone has to remember I came second.”
Lily stared at her.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You don’t have to.”
Then Vanessa put the photograph face down on the counter.
The tablet captured everything.
Lily discovered the recording that afternoon.
She watched it four times.
Not because it was shocking.
Because hearing Vanessa’s voice through a device made Lily realize how different the words sounded when she was not standing there afraid.
The behavior was real.
It was not something she imagined.
Lily saved the clip.
Then another.
Vanessa scolding her for crying.
Another where Vanessa threatened to cancel a visit with Caroline’s parents if Lily “kept making the house miserable.”
Another where Vanessa told her:
“If your father has to choose between a healthy marriage and your tantrums, eventually he will get tired.”
None of the early recordings showed physical violence.
That was important.
They showed a pattern.
Control.
Threats.
Isolation.
Making a child feel responsible for adult stability.
Lily did not know those terms.
She only knew she wanted Dad to hear Vanessa when Vanessa did not know he was listening.
She stored the clips in a private cloud folder under the name of a school project.
