Chapter 9 - The Foundation Had A Problem Bigger Than One Bad Video
By the next morning, the Carter Foundation board faced a serious governance issue.
Vanessa had not yet been elected executive chair.
That mattered.
She could simply be removed from consideration.
But she already held committee positions and had participated in grant decisions involving organizations serving vulnerable children.
The board commissioned an independent review.
Not because Lily’s private life needed to become public.
Because Vanessa’s behavior directly contradicted the responsibilities she wanted to hold.
The review focused on governance.
Had Vanessa used foundation staff for personal image management?
Had she pressured employees to stage family photographs?
Had she blurred charitable work with personal branding?
The answer, repeatedly, was yes.
No grand embezzlement.
No secret millions.
Something more ordinary.
Vanessa treated the foundation as an extension of herself.
She insisted Lily appear in newsletters.
Pushed staff to describe her as a stepmother whose “personal journey” inspired programs.
Rejected campaign materials that did not feature her prominently enough.
A communications manager remembered Vanessa saying:
“If people see Lily and me together, they understand I’m not just another donor wife.”
That sentence became important.
Lily was not merely family to Vanessa.
She was credential.
Evidence.
A living endorsement.
That explained why Vanessa became so angry whenever Lily resisted public affection.
A child refusing a staged hug threatened the story Vanessa was selling.
The board removed Vanessa from all leadership duties pending review.
Within ten days, she resigned.
Her name disappeared from the executive-chair ballot.
She called the process a public execution.
The board called it basic fiduciary judgment.
Nobody needed to prove Vanessa was evil.
