Chapter 4 - Lily Had Tried To Tell Her Father Before

Richard was not a cruel father.
That almost made the situation harder.
He loved Lily completely.
He simply kept failing to understand what she was trying to tell him.
Three months before the gala, Lily finally said directly:
“I don’t like being alone with Vanessa.”
Richard stopped working and looked at her.
“Why?”
Lily froze.
Eleven-year-olds do not always possess language sophisticated enough to explain patterns of coercion.
“She gets mean.”
“What does that mean?”
“She says things.”
“What things?”
Lily stared at the floor.
“That I make everything harder.”
Richard sighed.
“Sweetheart, Vanessa gets frustrated sometimes. So do I.”
“She’s different when you leave.”
That caught his attention.
“Different how?”
Lily almost told him.
Then Vanessa entered carrying tea.
“What are we discussing?”
Lily immediately went quiet.
Richard answered for her.
“She says you two have been struggling when I travel.”
Vanessa did not become defensive.
That would have looked guilty.
Instead she looked hurt.
“I thought we were doing better.”
Then she sat beside Lily.
“Did I make you feel unsafe?”
Lily could barely breathe.
Richard waited.
Vanessa waited.
Lily shook her head.
“No.”
Vanessa hugged her.
Richard felt relieved.
The conversation ended.
Later that night Vanessa entered Lily’s bedroom and closed the door.
She did not touch her.
She only said:
“If you accuse someone of being dangerous, you better understand what that can do to a family.”
Lily stared at her.
“Dad asked me.”
“And you answered correctly.”
Then Vanessa smiled.
“Good night.”
That was the evening Lily understood something important.
Talking was not enough.
May you like
Not when Vanessa could stand in the same room and turn every accusation into confusion.
If Lily ever told the truth again, she needed something that could not be interrupted.
