Chapter 12 - Lily Chose What Happened To The Recordings
The recordings created a difficult question.
What should happen to them?
The gala video had already been seen by hundreds of people.
Rumors spread quickly.
Richard could not erase that.
But he could prevent Lily’s private pain from becoming permanent public entertainment.
Several guests had recorded portions of the projection on their phones.
Foundation counsel sent formal requests asking them not to circulate footage involving a minor.
Most complied.
The Carter family made no public release.
No social-media campaign.
No television interview.
Lily’s evidence had served its purpose.
She did not need to become famous for being hurt.
As for the other recordings, Richard asked Lily what she wanted.
She surprised him.
“Keep them.”
“Why?”
“In case she says I lied.”
So they were preserved securely with counsel.
Not posted.
Not played for donors.
Not turned into content.
Some were reviewed privately by therapists and attorneys where necessary.
Others stayed sealed.
That decision helped Lily regain something Vanessa had repeatedly taken.
Control.
For months, Vanessa determined when Lily smiled.
Who she saw.
What she said about her mother.
How the family presented itself.
Now Lily got to decide who saw the most vulnerable evidence of her life.
One afternoon Richard asked whether she regretted playing the gala video.
Lily thought about it.
“I wish I didn’t have to.”
That answer was more mature than any triumphant revenge line could have been.
She had not wanted to destroy Vanessa publicly.
She had wanted one impossible thing.
