Chapter 11 - The Divorce Hearing Ended The Performance

The divorce settlement conference took place six months after the party.
By then the court had seen enough documentation to understand the shape of the case clearly.
Camille wanted money, image protection, and a non-disparagement agreement.
She got none of them.
What she did get was a sharply reduced settlement based on misconduct clauses in our prenup, particularly those involving documented abuse of a dependent child.
She fought that hard.
Then the hallway box came in.
Then the trust emails.
Then the evaluator’s findings.
Then the notebook.
Her attorney’s tone changed after that.
My mother tried to pressure me through extended family.
Some called me cruel.
Some said I was overreacting.
One aunt actually said, “Women make mistakes under stress.”
I answered only once.
“She hit Lily with a bat.”
After that, no one had much to say.
The final order barred Camille from any contact with Lily unless Lily herself, as an adult, ever chose otherwise.
When the judge signed, I felt no triumph.
Only relief.
Later, outside the courthouse, my mother stood near the steps waiting for me.
I almost kept walking.
Then she said, “You have turned my grandson against me.”
I turned.
“I don’t have a son.”
She frowned.
I continued.
“You mean your son. And no—I turned myself against you when I finally stopped lying to myself about who you are.”
May you like
For once, she had no ready answer.
