Chapter 6 - The Real Reason They Wanted Lily Gone

The motive revealed itself faster than I expected.

It started with a call from our family accountant.

He had seen unusual inquiries from Eleanor over the previous two months regarding the Whitmore Family Education Trust—an account set up by my late father for Lily’s future schooling and living expenses.

The trust could only be used for Lily.

Not me.

Not Camille.

Not my mother.

And definitely not for “household management adjustments,” which was the language Eleanor had used.

When I pressed further, the accountant admitted Eleanor had also asked a hypothetical question:

If Lily were enrolled in a residential program, would the trustees approve higher disbursements to the primary household for “parental transition support”?

I stared at the phone.

Residential program.

Boarding school.

There it was.

They were not merely fantasizing about sending Lily away.

They were exploring how to profit from it.

When I confronted the trustee’s office, they sent copies of the inquiry correspondence.

Camille was cc’d on two of them.

She had even added one note of her own:

Stability would improve if Lily were placed in a more structured environment.

My hand shook reading that line.

A more structured environment.

She had tried to build a paper trail.

Not enough to remove me as Lily’s father—that would never work—but enough to frame Lily as difficult, unstable, in need of specialized distance.

And if Lily were out of the house, Camille and Eleanor believed they could access more trust support while also getting the child they hated conveniently out of sight.

I finally understood why the pantry conversation had mattered.

Lily overhearing them did not just threaten a secret.

It threatened a plan.

And when a seven-year-old became a risk to that plan, Camille responded with violence.

I sent the emails to my attorney.

Then I sent them to my mother with one line:

You used my daughter’s future to finance your control. Do not contact us again.

She replied twelve minutes later:

You are being manipulated.

May you like

I did not answer.
