Chapter 8 - Lily Finally Told Me About The Hallway Closet

The next major break came from something small.
A closet.
During one of the child-psychologist sessions arranged through the court, Lily casually mentioned “the hallway closet with the punishment stuff.”
The psychologist flagged it immediately.
When I asked Lily later what she meant, she explained that Camille kept “scary things” there: the baseball bat, a leather belt, and a cardboard box filled with notes.
“What notes?”
“Rules,” Lily said.
“What kind of rules?”
“The ones for me.”
I got permission through my attorney to re-enter the house with an investigator present.
Inside the hallway closet, behind folded tablecloths, we found the box.
There were printed “behavior charts” Camille had made about Lily.
Some were absurd.
Cried when corrected
Manipulated father during dinner
Defiant facial expression
Attempted to divide family loyalties
One page had a section titled Escalation Responses.
Under that:
Withhold privileges
Bedroom isolation
Grandmother reinforcement
And one line that made the investigator go still:
Physical shock if theatrics continue
No explicit description.
No confession.
But together with the bat strike, it was enough to establish pattern and intent.
This had never been discipline.
It was a system.
Camille had built herself a private little regime around a seven-year-old child, and my mother had participated.
When I got back to the hotel apartment suite where Lily and I were still staying, she was coloring at the table.
I sat beside her.
“We found the box.”
Her hands stopped.
“Are you mad?”
“No. I’m proud of you.”
She looked up carefully.
“For telling?”
“For surviving,” I said, and kissed the top of her head.
May you like
That was the first time she cried and smiled at once.
