Chapter 14 - Lily Chose What Family Meant

Two years passed.

Life changed.

We moved.

Not because we had to, but because Lily wanted “a house that doesn’t remember bad things.”

So we bought a different one across town.

Smaller.

Warmer.

Louder.

Safer.

Rachel and I eventually fell in love the slow, responsible way two adults do when neither of them wants to use a child’s pain as a shortcut to intimacy.

When I asked Lily how she felt about Rachel joining our family for real, she answered, “She already did a long time ago.”

That nearly finished me.

One evening, when Lily was nine, she asked a question that told me more than any therapy report ever had.

“Do I still have to call Eleanor Grandma?”

“No.”

“Can I if I want to?”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to want to?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Okay. Then I don’t.”

Simple.

Clear.

No hatred.

Just truth.

Children often understand boundaries more naturally than adults do.

The rest of us are the ones who complicate them.
