Chapter 7 - Camille Tried To Blame Lily In Court Papers

The temporary protective order hearing happened eight days after the party.

Camille arrived in a cream suit and soft makeup, looking like a woman wounded by cruel misunderstanding.

My mother sat behind her.

Of course she did.

Camille’s filing alleged that Lily had been “emotionally volatile,” that I had “overreacted to a discipline issue,” and that she feared I was allowing a child to “rewrite reality under grief-related instability.”

My attorney slid the notebook to the judge.

Then the trust emails.

Then the urgent care report.

Then the statement from Lily’s former teacher regarding the drawing and documented concern.

Camille’s attorney kept trying to call the bat “lightweight sporting equipment.”

The judge shut that down quickly.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

My attorney asked whether Camille had ever discussed boarding school for Lily.

Camille said no.

My attorney handed her the printed email.

Camille went silent.

Then he asked whether Eleanor had advocated moving Lily to a “residential program.”

My mother claimed it was only an educational discussion.

Then the judge asked why those discussions included financial disbursement projections.

Eleanor had no clean answer.

Neither did Camille.

The protective order was granted.

Supervised-only contact with strict conditions.

No unsupervised access to Lily.

No physical proximity outside approved arrangements.

And, crucially, the judge ordered a child-focused custody evaluation because the allegations suggested a sustained environment of emotional mistreatment.

When we stepped out of court, my mother tried one last time.

“Graham,” she called.

I turned because old habits die slowly.

She looked smaller than usual on the courthouse steps, but not softer.

“You are humiliating this family.”

I looked at her for a long moment.

“No,” I said. “You and Camille did that yourselves.”

Then I walked away with Lily’s hand in mine.
