Chapter 13 - Madison and Eleanor Met Without Andrew

A year after the slap, Madison invited Eleanor to lunch.
Neutral restaurant.
Public.
No family audience.
Madison began:
“I’m not asking you to like me.”
Eleanor answered:
“Good start.”
Madison almost smiled.
Then:
“I called you useless.”
“Yes.”
“I was trying to make you feel old enough that nobody should listen to you.”
“Yes.”
“Because I thought if people stopped listening to you, they’d finally listen to me.”
Eleanor considered.
“Probably.”
Then Eleanor admitted her part.
“I made you feel like every new idea required passing an exam I designed.”
Madison looked surprised.
Eleanor continued.
“I have spent decades being the person everyone calls before making large decisions. Sometimes I confuse experience with jurisdiction.”
Madison laughed.
“That may be the most Eleanor sentence ever spoken.”
Probably.
Then:
“You also used Andrew’s secret against me.”
“Yes.”
“Do you regret it?”
“Yes.”
“Even after I slapped you?”
“Especially because you slapped me.”
Madison frowned.
Eleanor explained:
“I wanted the room to see you lose power.”
There.
Retaliatory humiliation.
Different from physical retaliation.
Still deliberate.
Then Madison asked:
“Do you forgive me?”
Eleanor took time.
“I’m not afraid of you anymore.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It’s the one I have.”
Fair.
Relationship remained limited.

But no longer poisoned by pretending one woman had to disappear for the other to matter.
