Chapter 9 - Madison Moved Out
Three weeks after the dinner, Madison rented a furnished house ten minutes from the vineyard.
Not divorce.
Not yet.
Andrew asked:
“Do you need space from me or from my family?”
“Both.”
Fair.
She took only her clothes and personal belongings.
The mahogany box remained with Eleanor.
Madison did not want to see it.
Couples therapy began.
First question:
Why did Andrew hide the debt?
Shame.
Fear of Madison saying:
I told you so.
Fear she would stop respecting him.
Fear his family would see him as financially reckless.
All true.
Then why did Madison stay with someone who had concealed millions?
Because their marriage was more than one deception.
Also because she was not ready to decide.
Then the therapist asked about Eleanor.
Madison said:
“I hate how much power she has over him.”
Andrew answered:
“She had power because I gave her the secret.”
Exactly.
Then:
“And you gave her power by making every disagreement with her about whether you belong.”
Madison looked at him.
Also true.
Both had triangulated Eleanor into their marriage.
Andrew went to grandmother when afraid to tell wife.
Madison fought grandmother when angry with husband.
Eleanor stepped into spaces neither spouse managed properly.
The solution was not:
remove Eleanor.
It was:
May you like
stop using her as third person in a two-person marriage.
