Chapter 7 - Madison Had Built Her Own Fantasy Around Andrew’s Shares

Madison’s anger did not make her financially innocent either.

She had not known about the debt.

But she had been treating Andrew’s future family wealth as though it were already available for her plans.

The private dining club proposal required approximately $12 million.

External investors would provide most.

The family hospitality company would contribute property and some capital.

Andrew’s branch was expected to invest $1.5 million personally if it wanted the largest upside allocation.

Madison assumed:

they would.

Why?

Because Andrew’s family stake was worth many times that.

But value on paper is not:

cash.

Andrew told her repeatedly:

“We can make it work.”

She heard:

the money exists.

Then she spent hundreds of thousands of her own money on preliminary designers, consultants, and concept development.

Not wasted entirely.

Still risk.

Eleanor asked once:

“Why are you investing before the structure is approved?”

Madison answered:

“Because somebody in this family has to move.”

Arrogant.

Then the debt.

Madison realized the $1.5 million Andrew had implied he could contribute never existed.

He had been planning to finance his portion by selling family interests.

Then she realized something harder.

She wanted the project partly because she was tired of being:

Andrew’s wife.

She had built a career before marriage.

Inside the Cole family, people constantly introduced her through him.

The dining club would be:

hers.

Her proof that she mattered independently.

When Eleanor delayed it, Madison heard:

You are still just the wife.

That insecurity made every disagreement personal.

Then she called Eleanor:

old and useless.

Exactly what Madison feared the family secretly thought about:

her.

Replaceable.

Peripheral.

Dependent on marriage for relevance.

She had attacked Eleanor with the same fear she carried herself.

Understanding did not excuse the slap.

May you like

It did reveal why the words were so vicious.
