Chapter 13 - Vanessa and Lily Saw Each Other Again Once

Three years passed before Lily chose to see Vanessa.
Lily was eleven.
Walking independently most days.
Still had occasional hip pain.
Vanessa had been in therapy for years and had respected the no-contact boundary.
No surprise visits.
No gifts sent directly.
No attempts to use relatives.
That restraint mattered.
Then Lily asked:
“Can I talk to her?”
Ethan was surprised.
“Why?”
“I want to know if she still thinks wheelchairs are for burdens.”
The meeting happened with Lily’s therapist present.
Neutral office.
Vanessa entered first.
Looked older.
Nervous.
Lily came in.
No hug.
Vanessa said:
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
Then Lily asked directly:
“Did you hate me?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“No.”
“Then why were you so mean?”
Vanessa took time.
“Because I was afraid that if everyone helped you too much, you would stop believing you could recover.”
Lily frowned.
“That sounds stupid.”
Vanessa almost smiled.
“It was.”
Then:
“And after I decided that was true, I started treating everything you did like proof.”
Lily looked at her therapist.
Then back.
“Did Dad really say he was sick of me?”
“No.”
“Did he complain?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.”
Ethan had authorized honest answers.
“What did he say?”
“That he was tired and scared and didn’t know how long everything would take.”
Lily nodded.
Then:
“You made it worse.”
“Yes.”
“On purpose?”
“The sentence I said to you? Yes.”
Specific.
Lily thought.
Then stood.
“I don’t want to see you again right now.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Okay.”
She did not ask:
when.
Good.
Lily left.
No reconciliation hug.
No miracle.
On the ride home she said:
“I thought I’d feel more.”
Ethan asked:
“Good or bad?”
“I don’t know.”
That was allowed too.

Closure is often much less cinematic than the harm.
