Chapter 3 - The Therapy Records Told a Different Story
Ethan asked for Lily’s complete rehabilitation record.
Not Vanessa’s summaries.
Not Rose’s interpretation.
The actual records.
Dr. Melissa Grant, Lily’s orthopedic surgeon, met Ethan at the hospital the next morning.
“Is something wrong with the surgery?” he asked.
“No.”
“With her recovery?”
“No.”
He looked confused.
Dr. Grant turned the tablet toward him.
Lily’s strength measurements had improved.
Her supported standing time had nearly doubled in eight weeks.
Her hip alignment remained good.
She had progressed from full assistance during transfers to moderate and sometimes minimal assistance.
“She’s doing well,” Dr. Grant said.
Ethan stared.
“Vanessa says she’s been regressing.”
“Based on what?”
“She refuses exercises.”
The surgeon looked through the file.
“She refused one full session in six weeks.”
“One?”
“One.”
“She cries constantly.”
Dr. Grant smiled faintly.
“She is eight years old and recovering from major orthopedic surgery.”
Ethan looked away.
Then physical therapist Aaron Cole joined them.
Aaron was more direct.
“Lily does sometimes stall.”
Ethan looked up.
“She exaggerates pain?”
“Sometimes children anticipate pain and report it before movement. We evaluate.”
“So Vanessa was right?”
“About Lily occasionally avoiding difficult work?”
“Yes.”
Then Aaron’s expression hardened.
“If Vanessa interpreted that as permission to shame her, no.”
Nuance.
That was what Ethan had missed.
Lily was not perfect.
Rose was not always right.
Vanessa was not wrong that independence mattered.
But a legitimate rehabilitation goal had become justification for emotional cruelty.
Then Ethan saw the hydrotherapy notes.
May 6: Completed 22 minutes. Cried during hip-flexion exercise. Resumed after rest.
Vanessa had texted:
Another wasted session. Twenty minutes of tears.
May 13: Session shortened by therapist due muscle fatigue.
Vanessa:
Lily manipulated therapist into ending early.
May 20: Lily requested Rose remain in room. Therapist permitted.
Vanessa:
Lily refuses therapy unless Rose babies her.
One event.
Two stories.
Then Dr. Grant asked:
“Who has been giving you most of your updates?”
Ethan already knew.
He hated answering.
“My wife.”
The surgeon paused.
“Your daughter’s medical team should speak to you directly.”
“Yes.”
“She should not need another adult to translate her recovery.”
Ethan nodded.
