Chapter 6 - Rose Had Helped Too Much Sometimes
Ethan wanted Rose to become the uncomplicated hero.
Rose refused.
“I overhelped her.”
He looked surprised.
Rose explained.
During the first months after surgery, Lily was in significant pain.
Rose hated watching.
So she did things too quickly.
Lifted Lily when Lily might have transferred with partial support.
Retrieved items Lily could have reached.
Pushed the wheelchair even on days therapists wanted Lily practicing propulsion.
Aaron Cole had corrected her.
Rose adjusted.
Then Lily learned something.
If she cried hard enough, Rose occasionally softened instructions.
Again:
not sinister.
Human.
Then Vanessa noticed.
Instead of discussing it professionally, she turned Rose into:
the enemy of progress.
That escalation mattered.
Rose said:
“Vanessa was right that I needed better boundaries.”
Ethan stared.
“You’re defending her?”
“No.”
Rose’s voice sharpened.
“I’m telling you accuracy matters.”
Then:
“She took one true thing and made everything around it false.”
Rose had indeed been too protective.
Lily had indeed sometimes used fear to escape tasks.
Ethan had indeed been inconsistent.
None justified:
spraying water into Lily’s face,
telling her she was unwanted,
threatening her with removal,
or using therapy as punishment.
Then Rose admitted something else.
She hated Vanessa long before the hydrotherapy incident.
Why?
Class.
Vanessa treated staff badly.
Corrected Rose publicly.
Called caregivers “hired hands.”
Rose became emotionally aligned with Lily against Vanessa.
Sometimes she interpreted strictness as cruelty too fast.
That was why Rose started writing exact descriptions instead of labels.
Not:
Vanessa abused Lily.
Instead:
Vanessa said, “Your dad is tired of this,” after Lily cried during transfer.
Facts.
Let others decide.
The notebook became powerful because Rose stopped trying to make it powerful.
She simply recorded.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why did Vanessa go white when she saw it?”
Rose turned to another section.
Not medical.
Dates.
Private hydrotherapy sessions.
Vanessa had begun scheduling extra sessions without the primary therapist present.
Not illegal by itself.
The suite could be rented privately.
But Lily’s medical plan did not require them.
Rose had written down each one because Lily returned frightened afterward.
Seven dates.
Ethan stared.
“What happened during them?”
Rose shook her head.
“I wasn’t allowed inside.”
