Chapter 14 - Lily Returned to the Hydrotherapy Suite

At twelve, Lily needed another short course of hydrotherapy.

Not because the surgery failed.

Growth spurt.

Tightness.

Her doctor recommended six sessions.

The country club suite had changed.

New fixtures.

Different towels.

Same pale stone.

Lily stopped outside the glass door.

Ethan waited beside her.

“You want another location?”

She looked through the glass.

“No.”

“You sure?”

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“Fair.”

Rose came too.

Not as caregiver.

As honorary nuisance.

She had retired the year before.

Lily said:

“You don’t have to come.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Free coffee.”

They entered.

The therapist handed Lily the shower nozzle at the end of the session.

“Rinse off.”

Lily stared at it.

For a second her face changed.

Ethan saw.

Said nothing.

Rose said nothing.

The therapist waited.

Lily turned on the water.

Tested the temperature against her hand.

Then rinsed her own arms.

Her own shoulders.

Finally her hair.

The water ran across her face.

She shut her eyes.

Breathed.

Then laughed.

“It’s too cold.”

The therapist adjusted it.

That was all.

No triumphant music.

No announcement that trauma had been defeated.

Then Rose accidentally splashed Ethan while reaching for a towel.

He stared.

Lily burst out laughing.

“Keep crying, Dad.”

Rose immediately said:

“Absolutely not.”

They all froze for half a second.

The old words.

Then Lily said:

“Sorry.”

Ethan smiled.

“It’s okay.”

The sentence no longer belonged entirely to Vanessa.

It was just language again.

Not harmless.

Not all-powerful.

May you like

Something they could choose not to carry.
