Chapter 12 - Noah’s Hearing Aid Became Evidence of Something Bigger Than the Case
The damaged hearing aid was kept after replacement.
Not because it contained audio.
It didn’t.
Not because police needed some magical recording.
They didn’t.
It mattered as physical evidence of the assault.
But to Rocco, it became something else.
A reminder of the assumptions adults make around disabled children.
Victoria believed Noah heard less.
Therefore, in her mind, he understood less.
Therefore, he mattered less as a witness.
She was wrong at every step.
Noah’s hearing impairment affected access to sound.
Not intelligence.
Not memory.
Not dignity.
Not his right to be believed.
Rocco realized how often even he had unconsciously simplified speech around Noah or spoken about appointments over his head as if the boy was not listening.
That changed.
From then on, Noah was included.
Age-appropriately.
Honestly.
His hearing aid was not something adults discussed as though he wasn’t in the room.
It belonged to him.
