Chapter 13 - Victoria Finally Admitted Why She Broke It

Months later, as part of the case, Victoria gave a formal statement.
The question was simple.
Why destroy Noah’s hearing aid?
Her first answers were useless.
Panic.
Stress.
Humiliation.
Finally she said:
“I wanted him to stop hearing us.”
The investigator asked:
“The device had already helped him hear the conversation.”
“I know.”
“So breaking it could not make him forget.”
Victoria looked down.
“I wasn’t thinking.”
“Then why hit him?”
Silence.
“Why slap a three-year-old child?”
Her eyes filled.
Not enough to make Rocco feel sympathy.
Finally:
“Because he looked at me like he understood.”
That was it.
Not because Noah threatened her.
Not because he yelled.
Because he looked at her.
A child’s face reflected back the truth of what she had become.

And she hated him for seeing it.
