Chapter 1 - 3:07 A.M.

At 3:07 in the morning, Emily Hart learned that silence could be louder than a scream.
Brandon's hand closed around her arm before she reached the bedroom door. He pulled her backward so suddenly that the hallway tilted beneath her bare feet. Her shoulder struck the bedframe once, hard enough to steal her breath but not hard enough to make a sound that would wake the neighbors.
"Get up. Now."
Lara stood in the doorway in a pearl-gray silk robe, one hand resting lightly against the frame. Brandon's mother had always known how to make cruelty look elegant. Her white hair was perfectly combed despite the hour, and the faint smile on her face was worse than anger.
Emily steadied herself and touched the split at the corner of her lip. The bruise had begun earlier that evening, when she asked why Brandon had changed the password to their joint account. He had called her paranoid. Lara had called her ungrateful. Together, they had spoken until Emily almost doubted the numbers she had seen.
Then she noticed the smoke detector.
A tiny red light blinked above the staircase.
Once.
Pause.
Once again.
Lara folded her arms. "Maybe you'll finally learn."
Brandon kicked Emily's dark coat across the hardwood floor. It slid past the staircase and stopped beside the laundry-room door.
"Clean my office."
Emily bent to retrieve the coat without meeting his eyes. That was what he expected now: obedience, lowered eyes, small movements. He did not see her thumb press against the hard shape sewn into the coat lining.
Her phone.
She walked toward the bathroom instead of the office.
"Where are you going?" Brandon asked.
"My lip is bleeding."
He muttered something, but Lara answered for him. "Two minutes."
Emily locked the bathroom door and turned on the faucet. Her hands trembled as she removed the phone and opened a folder labeled TAX RECEIPTS. Inside was a single encrypted file she had prepared over three sleepless weeks.
She pressed SEND.
The progress wheel moved slowly.
Twenty percent.
Footsteps entered the hallway.
Forty-three percent.
Brandon tested the bathroom handle.
"Open the door."
Seventy-eight percent.
Emily stared at the phone as if force of will could push the file through the walls.
Ninety-nine percent.
Sent.
She deleted the recent connection, hid the phone, and opened the door with a damp washcloth pressed to her mouth.
Brandon searched her face. "What were you doing?"
"Cleaning up."
For a second, he looked toward the ceiling. The smoke detector blinked again.
Emily saw uncertainty enter his expression, but Lara called from the bedroom before he could follow the thought.
"Brandon, let her finish downstairs. I don't want to hear this all night."
He pointed toward the staircase. "Go."
Emily descended, crossed the dark kitchen, and entered the laundry room. The window above the utility sink had been painted shut for years, but she had cut the seal two days earlier with a kitchen knife.
She lifted it slowly.
Cold March air rushed inside.
Emily climbed onto the washing machine, pushed the coat through first, and squeezed out into the darkness. Gravel cut into her bare feet when she dropped to the ground, but she kept moving.
At the edge of the yard, she looked once toward the house.
The upstairs light came on.
Brandon entered the hallway and stopped beneath the smoke detector. He stared at the blinking red light while Lara's confidence began to fade.
Emily whispered into the phone, "I sent it."
Then she disappeared between the trees.

Behind her, Brandon's voice broke through the night.
"What did she do?"
