Chapter 8 - THE FALL
With Lara and Hale in custody, prosecutors reconstructed Grant's final night.
Brandon invited him to the lake house under the pretense of reconciliation. Hale wanted the first witness list. Lara wanted the bank key and ledger.
Grant arrived carrying a recorder.
Brandon blocked the door when he tried to leave.
During the struggle, Brandon held Grant's arms while Lara searched his coat. Grant broke free and reached the balcony.
Lara followed.
The recorder captured voices, but wind obscured the final seconds.
Only one person knew whether Grant fell or was pushed.
Brandon.
Facing murder-conspiracy charges, he agreed to testify.
In federal court, he described the balcony.
Grant stood near the rail, warning that every file had copies. Lara slapped him. He stepped backward. Hale told Brandon to restrain him again.
Brandon grabbed Grant's sleeve.
Grant pulled away.
Lara reached for the recorder in his hand.
Her palm struck his chest.
He lost balance and went over the rail.
"Did she intend to push him?" the prosecutor asked.
Brandon stared at the floor.
"She intended to stop him. She did not care what happened after that."
"What did you do?"
"I looked over the edge. He was moving."
Emily stopped breathing.
Grant had survived the fall initially.
Brandon continued.
"I wanted to call 911. Hale took my phone. He said if Grant lived, we all went to prison."
"Did anyone go down to help him?"
"No."
They waited inside while Grant died below the balcony.
The cruelty was not a single push.
It was the decision not to save him.
Lara's defense argued accidental death. Hale's attorneys attacked Brandon as a liar seeking leniency. But the smoke-detector recording proved Hale had described the same events privately.
A jury convicted Lara of manslaughter, conspiracy, kidnapping, financial crimes, and obstruction. Hale was convicted of racketeering, witness tampering, conspiracy, and multiple counts connected to the deaths and disappearances of witnesses.
Brandon pleaded guilty to unlawful restraint, obstruction, financial fraud, and domestic assault.
At sentencing, he apologized to Emily.
"I became afraid of my mother before I learned how to be a man," he said.
Emily stood when the judge allowed her to respond.
"Fear explains why you were weak," she said. "It does not explain why you made me pay for it."
Brandon lowered his head.
Emily continued.
"You heard my father asking for help. Years later, you heard me asking for truth. Both times, you chose the person who frightened you most."
The judge sentenced him to prison.

Long enough that the house at 3:07 a.m. would never belong to him again.
