Chapter 7 - THE COAT LINING

Emily remembered the hard shape sewn into her coat.
She had assumed it was only the phone pocket she created herself. At the safe apartment, technicians opened the lining completely.
Between two layers of fabric was a thin polymer strip no larger than a bookmark.
It contained encrypted data.
Grant must have hidden it years earlier, perhaps during a visit when Emily left the coat at his house. After his death, the coat moved with her through three apartments and into the Hart home.
Lara kicked it across the hallway without knowing the evidence was inside.
The strip held the second list.
It named fourteen witnesses, including procurement officers, engineers, bank employees, and one judge. Most had suffered sudden career failures after refusing the Hart network.
Three were dead.
Two were missing.
One name shocked Marcus.
Nathan Cole.
The auditor was listed as alive under a protected identity.
The anonymous caller was almost certainly Nathan.
Federal protection teams moved to secure every surviving witness.
They were too late for one.
A former Hart engineer named Susan Bell disappeared from her home minutes before agents arrived. Security footage showed Lara entering the property wearing a dark coat and sunglasses.
Lara was not merely escaping.
She was eliminating the list.
Nathan contacted Emily again.
This time, he removed the voice distortion.
"Hale has Susan," he said. "They will trade her for the polymer strip."
"Where?"
"The Hart family lake house."
The place where Grant died.
Marcus refused to let Emily participate in the exchange.
Nathan argued that Hale would verify her presence before releasing Susan. Emily was the only person he believed held the evidence.
A tactical plan formed around the property.
The lake house stood on a cliff above dark water, its glass walls reflecting the winter sky. Emily wore a transmitter beneath her sweater and carried a duplicate strip.
Inside, Lara waited beside Susan, who was tied to a dining chair but alive.
Hale stood near the balcony doors holding a pistol.
"Your father came through that same door," Lara said. "He was just as certain that truth made him untouchable."
Emily placed the strip on the table.
"Let Susan go."
Hale examined it with a portable reader.
The duplicate was convincing for thirty seconds.
Then the screen flashed INVALID.
Hale raised the gun.
Officers breached the lower entrance.
Lara dragged Susan toward the balcony while Hale fired into the ceiling, forcing Emily back.
Marcus entered from the hallway and ordered him to drop the weapon.
Hale turned toward Marcus.
Susan drove her chair backward into Lara's legs.
Emily pulled Susan away as officers surrounded them.
Lara reached the same balcony rail where Grant had died.
For a moment, she looked down at the rocks.
Then she lifted her hands.
She did not jump.
She chose trial.
Hale was arrested beside the glass doors.
As officers led Lara away, she looked at Emily's coat.
"Grant always hid important things in ordinary places," she said.
May you like
Emily met her eyes.
"That is why you never understood him."
