Chapter 6 - THE MAN AT THE FUNERAL
Senator Richard Hale appeared on television the next morning, denying any connection to illegal contracts.
He called the investigation a politically motivated attack on a respected family and described Emily as "a vulnerable woman being manipulated during a marital crisis."
Lara had not needed to file the guardianship petition.
Hale was declaring Emily unstable in public.
Within hours, edited footage appeared online. It showed Emily shouting during arguments with Brandon, breaking a glass, and searching his office. The clips removed everything that happened before each reaction.
Brandon issued a statement through his lawyer.
He loved his wife.
He feared for her mental health.
He hoped she would return safely.
Emily watched from the protected apartment while strangers debated whether she was an abused woman or a dangerous liar.
"This is what the camera was for," she said. "Not only proof. Protection from their version."
Marcus agreed to release one authenticated segment through the prosecutor's office. It showed Brandon and Lara discussing the false clinic evaluation.
Public opinion shifted, but Hale remained untouched.
Then the anonymous source delivered the local memory module to a newspaper reporter.
The full-resolution footage contained a conversation recorded two nights before Emily escaped.
Hale stood beneath the smoke detector in Brandon's hallway.
"The Lawson file survived," he said.
Lara answered, "Emily does not know where it is."
"She knows enough to become inconvenient."
Brandon paced near the staircase. "I'm not doing what you did to her father."
Hale stepped closer.
"You already did. You brought Grant to the lake house. You held him while your mother searched his pockets. The only difference is that Lara let go first."
The room became silent.
Then Brandon said, "He was alive when I left the balcony."
Hale replied, "That is the story keeping you useful."
The recording transformed the case.
Brandon had restrained Grant during the confrontation.
Lara had been on the balcony.
Hale knew exactly what happened.
Federal agents moved to arrest the senator.
His home was empty.
His private plane had departed forty minutes earlier without a filed destination.
At the same time, Lara vanished from a medical transport after claiming chest pain. Two men wearing paramedic uniforms intercepted the ambulance.
Brandon remained in custody, suddenly terrified.
He requested to speak with Emily.
Marcus advised against it.
Emily agreed anyway, through reinforced glass.
Brandon looked smaller in jail clothing.
"My mother is going to kill you," he said.
"Your mother tried to erase me."
"You don't understand. She isn't running from prison. She's running to Hale. They need the folder."
"The police have it."
"Not the real one."
Emily's stomach tightened.
Brandon leaned toward the glass.
"Your father made two lists. One named the people taking money. The other named the people who refused. Hale wants both, because the second list contains the only witnesses who can destroy him."
