Chapter 2 - THE RECIPIENT

Emily ran until the house lights vanished behind the tree line.
The neighborhood looked peaceful at that hour. Wide lawns. Stone mailboxes. Expensive homes with security signs near the driveways. She had once believed wealth made danger easier to see. Brandon had taught her the opposite. In houses like theirs, fear wore cashmere and spoke quietly.
A dark sedan waited beside the closed tennis club two blocks away.
Emily hesitated until the driver's window lowered.
Detective Marcus Vale lifted one hand. "Emily. Get in."
She had met him only once, in the back booth of a diner where nobody from Brandon's company would recognize her. Marcus worked for the state financial-crimes unit, though the first business card he gave her identified him only as an investigator.
He unlocked the doors.
Emily climbed inside and pulled the coat around her pajamas.
"Did the file arrive?" she asked.
Marcus did not answer immediately. He looked at her bruised lip, then at the dark house beyond the trees.
"It arrived."
Relief moved through her so sharply that she almost collapsed.
"What happens now?"
"First, a doctor documents your injuries. Then we place you somewhere Brandon can't reach."
"And the file?"
"My team is verifying it."
Emily gripped the phone. "You said if I gave you proof, you could stop him."
"I said evidence gives us a chance."
The distinction frightened her.
The file contained thirteen months of audio and video captured by a hidden camera inside the smoke detector. Emily had installed it after discovering that Brandon's consulting firm moved millions through shell companies connected to Lara's private foundation. At first, she thought the camera would record financial conversations.
It recorded much more.
Brandon pressuring employees to falsify contracts.
Lara arranging payments to local officials.
Meetings held at midnight with men who never used the front door.
And, during the last week, conversations about Emily herself.
They knew she had been asking questions.
They planned to have her declared unstable.
Lara had already contacted a private clinic.
Marcus drove toward the city.
"Who else knew about the camera?" he asked.
"No one."
"Who installed it?"
"I did."
"Where did you buy it?"
"I didn't."
Marcus glanced at her.
Emily looked down at the phone.
The smoke detector had arrived in a package with no return address three months earlier. Inside was a handwritten note:
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FATHER, PUT THIS ABOVE THE STAIRS.
Emily had not told Marcus about the note.
Her father, Grant Lawson, died five years earlier after falling from the balcony of Lara's lake house. Police called it an accident. Brandon said Grant had been drinking.
Emily never believed either explanation completely.
The camera changed that.
One recording captured Lara saying, "Her father should have understood the first warning."
Brandon answered, "You promised we would never discuss that again."
That sentence was why Emily contacted Marcus.
At the hospital, a nurse photographed the bruises and gave Emily clean clothes. Marcus waited outside the examination room.
When she emerged, he held a tablet.
"The file is authentic," he said. "But there's a problem."
He showed her the upload log.
The file had been sent to Marcus.
And to a second recipient.
An address Emily had never seen.

Someone else had received every recording.
Someone who knew about the camera before she did.
