Chapter 2 - THE GRANDFATHER THEY BURIED ALIVE

Arthur survived because the bullet struck reinforced glass.

The shooter escaped through the east roof before security reached him.

David claimed he had been on the balcony only after hearing the shot.

The mansion cameras showed him arriving thirty seconds earlier.

Conveniently, the footage before that had been erased.

Sterling security took Lily and me to a secure medical floor beneath a private hospital owned by Arthur’s foundation.

Lily needed stitches and dental surgery.

She asked for no one except me.

Arthur waited outside the treatment room.

He did not force contact.

That mattered.

When Lily finally slept, I confronted him.

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Since the day you were born.”

“And you let me grow up thinking my father died before I could remember him.”

His jaw tightened.

“That was the story your mother chose.”

“My mother is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell me why.”

Arthur sat slowly.

Thirty-two years earlier, Eleanor Vale worked as a forensic accountant for Sterling Global.

She discovered the Thorne family had been moving pension money through medical charities.

Arthur began helping her investigate.

They fell in love.

Then Eleanor became pregnant.

Arthur was married at the time, though separated privately.

His board warned that acknowledging me would trigger a succession war.

Eleanor refused to hide me.

Then she discovered something worse.

The Thorne family had created a private trust designed to absorb distressed assets from anyone tied to Sterling blood.

If I were publicly recognized, my future children could challenge both families’ holdings.

Arthur said he wanted to acknowledge me anyway.

Eleanor disagreed.

She believed the safer path was to place me under another identity until the evidence was secure.

She married a quiet engineer named Thomas Bennett.

He raised me as his daughter.

I loved him.

He loved me.

He died when I was twelve.

Arthur remained in the background.

School fees.

Medical care.

A “family scholarship.”

The red bracelet.

All from him.

“Why didn’t you tell me when I became an adult?”

“Because Eleanor disappeared.”

My breath stopped.

“She died in a car accident.”

“No.”

Arthur opened a file.

My mother’s body had never been identified independently.

The death certificate was signed by Dr. Stephen Cross.

The same physician connected to the Thorne family foundation.

Eleanor vanished after stealing evidence from the Dynasty Trust.

Arthur believed the Thornes held her somewhere.

Then I married David Thorne.

The son of the family she had investigated.

Arthur tried to warn me.

I remembered.

He told me David’s finances were unstable.

I called it class prejudice.

He asked me to postpone the wedding.

I told him he was not my father.

He accepted the words because I did not know how cruelly accurate they were.

“Why unseal everything now?”

“Because the trust clause activated when David assaulted Lily and attempted to force the divorce.”

“What clause?”

Arthur explained.

My mother had inserted a dormant protection into the Sterling Dynasty Trust.

If any Thorne heir harmed a recognized Sterling descendant while pursuing property, all sealed paternity, medical, and financial records would release automatically.

She expected the family to attack me one day.

She built a trap around that expectation.

The released records showed:

David had transferred marital assets into Chloe’s name.

Martha had hired a psychiatrist to declare me unstable.

The divorce papers waived Lily’s inheritance rights.

Chloe’s pregnancy had been medically manufactured through an embryo arrangement.

And the shooter on the roof was not a stranger.

He was Marcus Vale.

My mother’s younger brother.

The uncle I had never known existed.

Arthur believed Marcus worked for the Thornes.

Then Lily woke.

She cried when she saw Arthur.

Not from fear.

Recognition.

She pointed at him.

“You’re the man from Grandma’s picture.”

Arthur nodded.

“Yes.”

“Are you my grandpa?”

He looked at me first.

I gave the smallest nod.

“Yes,” he said. “If you want me to be.”

Lily stared at him.

Then asked:

“Why didn’t you stop the lady from hitting me?”

The question broke him more than the bullet had.

“I wasn’t there.”

“You came late.”

“Yes.”

“Mommy came fast.”

Arthur looked at me.

“She always does.”

Then Detective Claire Nolan entered.

She had been assigned to the rooftop shooting.

She placed a photograph on the table.

Marcus Vale was not the man with the rifle.

The shooter used his identity.

The real Marcus had been found unconscious inside the mansion wine cellar.

He had been tied there for six hours.

Then Claire showed us the shooter’s face from a traffic camera.

David Thorne’s younger brother.

Owen.

The groom from the family’s last public scandal.

Except Owen had been declared dead in a boating accident three years earlier.

Another dead relative who was not dead.

And according to the Dynasty Trust files, Owen was Lily’s biological father.
