Chapter 8 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME BACK

Eleanor moved into a rehabilitation center after rescue.

I visited alone first.

She looked older than my memories.

Of course she did.

I had remembered a woman frozen at thirty-seven.

The woman before me was sixty-nine.

She reached for my hand.

Then stopped.

“May I?”

“Yes.”

Her fingers closed around mine.

I wanted to embrace her.

I wanted to accuse her.

Both feelings stayed.

“Why didn’t you come for me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Many times.”

“Arthur said you disappeared.”

“I was moved between facilities.”

“You visited Lily after birth.”

“Yes.”

“Then you could have contacted me.”

She looked down.

“I was afraid your marriage made you unsafe.”

“You decided without telling me.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

That helped more than explanation.

Then I asked about Thomas.

She smiled through tears.

“He knew exactly who you were.”

“He never told me.”

“He promised to protect you from Sterling control.”

“He let me think he wasn’t my father.”

“He thought the lie gave you freedom.”

Again.

Protection through withheld truth.

Thomas had died believing the secret kept me safe.

It had also made me vulnerable to David’s story.

If I had known the full family history, the Thornes could not have isolated me so easily.

Eleanor agreed.

“I loved you and still made choices that harmed you.”

That sentence allowed a relationship to begin.

Not forgiveness.

Not reunion.

Beginning.

Lily met her later with a therapist present.

Eleanor did not call herself Grandma first.

Lily asked:

“Are you Mommy’s mom?”

“Yes.”

“Did bad people lock you up?”

“Yes.”

“Did you leave Mommy?”

“I was taken. Then later I stayed silent too long.”

Lily nodded.

Children understood mixed truth better than adults.

Then Lily asked about Arthur.

“Is he Grandpa?”

Eleanor looked at me.

I answered:

“He is part of our family, but not because of blood.”

Lily considered.

“Can I still call him Grandpa?”

“Yes.”

Arthur cried when she did.

Not in public.

In the hallway afterward.

Then Eleanor gave Lily the original photograph from the Bible.

Arthur.

Andrew.

Thomas.

Eleanor.

Four adults before the lies.

On the back she wrote:

NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE TO CARRY THE SECRET OF WHICH ADULT MATTERS MOST.

The photograph stayed in Lily’s room for one year.

May you like

Then she moved it to a drawer.

Her choice.
