Chapter 3 - THE CHILD DAVID CLAIMED AS HIS

I stared at Claire.
“That’s impossible.”
Lily was conceived during my marriage.
David had been at every appointment.
He signed the birth certificate.
He held her after delivery.
Then Arthur opened a sealed reproductive file.
Seven years earlier, David learned he was infertile.
Instead of telling me, Martha arranged treatment through Cross Fertility Institute.
The embryo implanted during my first successful cycle used my egg.
The sperm donor was labeled anonymous.
It was not.
Owen Thorne.
David’s younger brother.
Why use Owen?
Because the Thorne trust required direct male-line genetics for inheritance.
David wanted a child recognized as his while preserving the blood requirement.
Owen agreed in exchange for debt forgiveness.
Then later threatened to expose the arrangement.
Three years ago, his boat exploded.
No body recovered.
David inherited Owen’s remaining shares.
The family declared him dead.
Now Owen had shot at Arthur.
Or appeared to.
The records showed he had been moving under multiple identities.
Then Claire played an audio file recovered from the deleted balcony feed.
David:
“You only need to scare the old man.”
Owen:
“You said the child would be with him.”
David:
“She won’t matter if the trust freezes.”
My stomach turned.
David had known Lily was Owen’s biological child.
He had still watched Chloe hit her.
He had used the girl publicly as his daughter when convenient and privately called her defective when her blood threatened him.
Then Claire showed us a second recording.
Chloe:
“Once Catherine signs, Lily goes with her. Our son gets the real trust.”
David:
“If Cross confirms male.”
Chloe:
“He already did.”
The pregnancy.
Chloe claimed she carried David’s son.
But if David was infertile, whose child was it?
The file answered.
Owen’s.
Martha had reused the same arrangement.
Chloe’s unborn child and Lily were biological half-siblings.
The mistress had struck the sister of her own child.
Arthur said:
“This is not family planning. It is succession engineering.”
The Thorne Dynasty Trust awarded controlling rights to the first living child of the male bloodline unless fraud or violence invalidated the claim.
Lily was first.
Chloe’s unborn son was second.
If Lily’s inheritance rights were waived in the divorce, Chloe’s son became primary.
That was the motive.
Not love.
Not shame.
Control.
Then Claire revealed another problem.
The divorce papers had been filed electronically.
My forged signature appeared.
If the court accepted them before the assault evidence entered, David could argue Lily’s rights were already surrendered.
Priya Patel, Arthur’s legal counsel, filed an emergency injunction.
The judge froze the divorce.
Then the hospital lost power.
Backup generators activated.
Security doors locked.
A nurse entered Lily’s room carrying medication.
I noticed her badge.
The photograph did not match her face.
I moved between her and the bed.
“Who are you?”
She reached into her pocket.
Arthur’s security tackled her.
Inside the syringe was potassium chloride.
Enough to stop Lily’s heart.
The woman refused to speak.
Her fingerprint matched a dead maternity nurse named Rachel Moore.
Another stolen identity.
Then the encrypted phone vibrated.
A new video had been uploaded to the unsealed archive.
My mother.
Alive.
Older.
Thin.
Seated in a dark room.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Catherine, if Arthur released this, Lily is in danger.”
My hands shook.
My mother continued.
“Do not trust the Sterling Trust. Do not trust Arthur. The red bracelet was never protection.”
Arthur’s face changed.
The video ended with one sentence.
“The man who ordered my disappearance was Lily’s grandfather.”
I looked at Arthur.
May you like
He whispered:
“She thinks it was me.”
