Chapter 1 - The Slap in the Restaurant

The sharp, brutal slap cracked through the crowded restaurant like a gunshot.
The sound itself was small, but the effect was devastating. Cora Donnelly, a twenty-seven-year-old waitress, staggered violently sideways. Her heel caught the wooden leg of an empty chair. The heavy silver serving tray flew from her hands.
Plates hit the hardwood floor, shattering into dozens of sharp porcelain pieces.
Cora crashed to the ground right into the mess. The side of her pale face burned with a stinging, humiliating heat. Her dark hair fell across her cheek, hiding her eyes. For several agonizing seconds, all she could hear was the frantic, terrified thumping of her own heartbeat.
Standing right above her was Thaddius Mercer. Her stepfather.
He swayed slightly, his uneven stance throwing too much weight onto his heels. He reeked of cheap whiskey, a scent that cut aggressively through the warm, romantic candlelight and rich Italian food of Il Farro in Boston’s North End.
"You ungrateful little brat," Thaddius ground out, his slurred, thick voice easily reaching every single table in the dining room. "I took you in when you had nothing! Now you think you can ignore my calls? You think you can hide from me?!"
Cora squeezed her eyes shut. She forced herself not to cry. Crying in front of Thaddius had always made things so much worse when she was growing up.
She looked at the diners sitting less than three feet away. Wealthy men in expensive suits. Women in silk dresses. They all looked down at their plates. They studied their wine glasses. Some whispered, but absolutely no one moved to help her.
Their polite, cowardly silence was almost more painful than the slap itself.
Cora placed her hands flat against the wooden floor, preparing to stand up alone. She had done it her entire life.
