Chapter 4 - The Black Cars

Thaddius let out a loud, forced laugh, trying to mask his sudden, escalating panic.
"What, you called the cops?" Thaddius sneered, gesturing wildly to the frozen dining room. "Go ahead! Nobody here saw anything! These rich snobs aren't going to testify in court for a waitress! Isn't that right?!"
The statement contained just enough truth to make Cora’s stomach turn sick. The wealthy diners aggressively looked down at their plates, proving Thaddius right.
Wesley didn't argue. He didn't even flinch. He just calmly looked at his expensive wristwatch.
That tiny, simple movement completely shattered the smirk on Thaddius’s face. It implied that whatever Wesley had just called, it wasn't the police. And it was already on its way.
From the kitchen doors, Papa G, the older restaurant owner, stepped out. He looked at Wesley. A slow, terrifying recognition dawned on the owner’s face. He quickly grabbed the young kitchen assistant and pulled him back into the safety of the kitchen, locking the swinging doors.
Outside the massive front windows of Il Farro, the busy Boston street suddenly became strangely, eerily still.
Wesley leaned down slightly toward Cora.
"You don't need to be afraid anymore," Wesley said quietly. "No one in this room will be allowed to touch you."
He didn't say it to reassure her. He said it like an established, unchangeable fact of physics.
Then, the headlights cut through the dark street outside.
Not police cruisers. Black cars.
First one massive, tinted SUV violently hopped the curb, parking directly in front of the restaurant doors. Then a second. Then a third. Within thirty seconds, the entire street was completely blockaded by heavy, unmarked vehicles.

Thaddius stumbled backward, bumping into an empty table, his face draining of all color.
