Chapter 2 - The Quiet Man at Table 6

The sound was quiet. Decisive.
The man at table 6 slowly rose. He didn't rush. He didn't shout. He calmly folded his linen napkin and placed it neatly beside his half-eaten plate. Then, he moved his chair back and stepped out into the main aisle.
The terrifying calmness of his movements drew more attention from the terrified diners than a scream would have.
Cora looked up from the floor. It was her regular Thursday customer.
For four months, she had known him only as Mr. Cain. He always sat in that exact corner. He always ordered the same red wine. He rarely spoke, and he always left tips so massive they felt almost apologetic. Cora had always noticed his eyes—they moved constantly, assessing the room, but they were always distant. Almost frozen.
She didn't know that Wesley Cain owned the building that housed Il Farro. She didn't know he owned most of the block, or that he was the terrifying head of the most powerful underground syndicate in Boston.
And she certainly didn't know that for four months, he had been quietly watching her. He had noticed how she flinched at loud noises. He had seen the fear hidden behind her polite smiles.
Now, the frozen distance in his eyes was completely gone.
Wesley stopped right between Cora and Thaddius.
He didn't look angry. He looked controlled. And that was infinitely more frightening.
"You just struck a woman," Wesley observed, his voice so dangerously quiet the entire restaurant had to hold its breath to hear him. "And knocked her to the floor."
Thaddius puffed out his chest, stepping forward aggressively. "Stay out of this, buddy! This is family business. She owes me all her tips!"

Then, Thaddius actually looked into Wesley’s eyes.
